In the world of mixed martial arts, there are few stories as captivating and inspiring as that of Kultar “Mamba” Gill. Born in Mission, BC, Kultar’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a household name in the MMA world is nothing short of extraordinary. Growing up, Kultar spent much of his early years in India, attending boarding schools for a few years and graduating from Rick Hansen secondary school in Abbotsford. It was during this time that he first discovered his passion for combat sports. At the age of 12, he joined the Abbotsford Muay Thai club, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Kultar’s talent and determination quickly set him apart despite his young age. By the age of 16, he had become one of the top kickboxers in Canada, capturing his first World Title fight in Auckland, New Zealand, and competing against opponents much older and more experienced than himself.
Nicknamed “Chopsticks” for his slim yet lethal build, Kultar continued to climb the ranks, earning recognition as the sixth-ranked fighter in the world by age 19. His prowess in Muay Thai took him to every corner of the globe, where he showcased his skills on the world stage.
At 22, Kultar transitioned to MMA, where he quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. Disposing of local talent with ease, he soon found himself on the world stage, competing against the best fighters from around the globe. His talent caught the attention of the Prestige K1 organization in Japan, where he became a household name throughout Asia. It was there that he earned the moniker “Black Mamba” from his Japanese fans, a testament to his ferocity inside the ring.
Despite offers from the UFC and a spot on the TUFF reality show, Kultar remained loyal to his Japanese fan base, retiring from professional fighting at the age of 28. However, his retirement was short-lived, as he returned to compete in India for the SFL organization, backed by the Bollywood elite. Kultar’s journey was marked by resilience and determination stemming from his upbringing. He emerged from a broken household, having never known his mother. Yet, he found strength and solace through the Abbotsford Muay Thai Club, which served as a pillar of support and guidance during his formative years. Moreover, Kultar’s commitment to service extended beyond the realm of combat sports. He served in the Canadian army and worked as a correctional officer, embodying the values of discipline and duty instilled in him through his diverse experiences. Throughout his illustrious career, Kultar always remembered his roots. In 2010, he founded Mamba MMA, a gym dedicated to helping high-risk youth find direction and purpose through combat sports. Leveraging his experience and expertise, Kultar created a nurturing environment where young fighters could thrive and excel.
In just one year, Mamba MMA produced numerous kickboxing and MMA champions, many of whom went on to compete on the international stage. Recognized for their accomplishments, these athletes brought pride to their city and inspiration to their peers. In 2014, Kultar expanded his vision with the launch of the Mamba Fight League, providing young fighters with a high-level platform to showcase their talents and compete for spots in larger worldwide organizations. Through his tireless dedication and unwavering commitment, Kultar has transformed Mamba MMA into a beacon of hope and opportunity for the youth of Abbotsford.
Today, Kultar “Mamba” Gill may have retired from professional fighting. Still, his legacy lives on through Mamba MMA and the countless lives he has touched. From his beginnings in Mission, BC, to his triumphs on the world stage, Kultar’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of greatness.
